Uninterruptible DC emergency power supply for fail-safe systems in industrial and medical applications

Our DC UPS systems for 12 V / 24V / 48V take care of an uninterruptible power supply and a fail-safe availability of process-relevant systems and components. Maintenance-free Supercaps, long-life and safe LiFePo4 and lithium-ion battery packs or classic lead-acid batteries go into action. Our decentralised UPS systems provide effective protection against power failure, flicker, fluctuation or voltage drops in DC power supplies. This avoids cost-intensive plant downtimes, downtimes and the loss of precious data in a variety of applications and fields of applications, such as measurement and control technology, automation / Industry 4.0, motor drives, sensors, camera and security systems, industrial PCs, gateways, process control systems, medical and laboratory technology, mobile systems and much more.

DC UPS systems with many application areas and designs

The compact DIN rail version UPSI-D with robust aluminum housing is equipped with a universal DIN rail mounting system for quick and flexible installation in control cabinets. Used as a separate energy storage unit also in a DIN Rail housing are particularly long-lasting and safe LiFePO4 battery cells (lithium iron phosphate) as well as absolutely maintenance-free supercaps (ultracapacitors) available. Particularly long-lasting and safe LiFePO4 battery cells (lithium iron phosphate) as well as absolutely maintenance-free supercaps (ultracapacitors) are available als separate energy storage, also in a DIN Rail housing. Due of the used energy storage technologies the UPSI system is characterised by low total cost of ownership (TCO) and high safety and longevity. Furthermore, open frame variants for a direct system integration (UPSI), compact and maintenance-free DC UPS modules for DIN-Rail mounting (UPSIC), combined solutions with integrated energy storage (UPSI-DP) and IP67 outdoor versions (UPSI-IP) are available. As energy storage, Bicker Elektronik offers not only supercaps and LiFePO4 cells, but also Li-ion and lead-acid batteries.

Efficient charging and control electronic means high readiness

A bidirectional converter as a central element and several charging methods with individual adaptation of the charging end voltage (Constant Current, Constant Voltage and Constant Power) ensure a very efficient and safe charging and discharging process for each energy store. In addition to the energy transmission line (BAT PWR), all relevant operating data of the energy storage device are continuously monitored and controlled via I2C interface on the data line (BAT DATA).

Intelligent PowerSharing optimizes system dimensioning

The PowerSharing function on the input side ensures that the upstream AC/DC power supply does not have to be oversized, but the input power is kept constant and distributed accordingly to the load and the charger. That means, at low load at the output more energy flows into the charging process and vice versa.

Integrated reboot funktion for PC based systems

For PC-based controllers and computer systems the integrated reboot function automatically starts auto-recovery after a shutdown and recurring supply voltage, without the intervention of a service employee is being necessary. Additionally, a battery start function allows to manually activate the (separate) energy storage and thus initially start the system out of the battery, e.g. to make a diagnosis.

Interfaces and UPS Software

USB and RS232 interfaces make data communication with controllers/SPS or PC based systems available. With the aid of the HID Battery Parameter Software, settings can be comfortably made at the DC UPS. In addition, a comprehensive instruction set enables the direct readout of sensor values and the setting of parameters. The HID Battery Parameters software is available for download free of charge for each product.

Battery relax mode extends life of lithium-ion batteries

With the battery relax mode, Bicker Elektronik addresses the Problem, that in many DC UPS systems the battery pack is often operated for a very long time (possibly for months) to charge end voltage on the charger, in order to always ensure full UPS readiness. However, when lithium-ion cells remain continuously loading in the charge-end-state for such long periods, the life of the cells decreases dramatically after a few months. To protect the cells, it is therefore necessary that after a defined time the charging MOSFET at the end of charge is deactivated. The discharge MOSFET remains active, so that a discharge is possible at any time. When detecting a discharge (UPS operation after power failure), the previously deactivated charge MOSFET is immediately reconnected so that the current flow through the body diode lasts only a few microseconds and the charger returns to the regular operating mode. The protection of the battery pack by the relax mode results in a significantly longer life and thus increased system availability.

Minimum load detection

The minimum load detection of the UPSI control unit monitors in backup mode (battery mode) the output load which is supplied by the energy storage. If the load at the output falls below a certain limit value, the energy store is automatically disconnected from the charging and control unit so that the energy storage is not unnecessarily emptied by the DC-UPS electronics.

Long-term availability and added values
