Whether electronically, thermally or mechanically – in contrast to consumer PCs, industrial PCs have to meet extensive requirements in industrial applications. Typical areas of application include Industry 4.0 / IIoT, robotics, automation, medical and laboratory technology, vision, telecommunications, Kiosk / POS / POI, process and safety technology, energy and traffic as well as mobile applications. The product quality of the motherboard used is of crucial importance for the long-term availability and reliability of the overall system. That is why high-quality industrial motherboards are designed for 24/7 continuous operation under harsh environmental conditions with shock and vibration loads, high temperatures, electrical interference fields and fast load changes. In addition to resistance to environmental influences and stress factors, long-term availability, consistent life cycle management and professional BIOS and software support also play an important role in industry and medical technology. In order for the industrial motherboard to function reliably in continuous operation even at ambient temperatures of up to +50 °C, it must be dimensioned at least up to +60 °C. For this, particularly high-quality active and passive components for the extended industrial temperature range are used, e.g. solid, polymer and electrolytic capacitors from brand manufacturers - generally with +105 °C long-life types. Low heat dissipation, optimized heat management and sophisticated layout and manufacturing processes for industrial motherboards and processors ensure the protection of temperature-sensitive components and the high signal quality and performance even in systems with high loads and minimal airflow. In the context of climate tests, the system stability during operation with changing or maximum ambient temperature is proved. Compliance with the EMC requirements for electromagnetic compatibility are among others verified by EN-61000-6-2 test (industrial immunity). For extreme operating conditions with mechanical shocks, industrial motherboards are built appropriately robust and tested for industrial suitability according to DIN EN 60068-2-27 (shock) and DIN EN 60068-2-54 (vibration). This ensures the stable function and longevity in the industrial environment as well as the mechanical locking and anchoring of plug connections, modules and heat sinks.
